This workshop will be about Sashiko, a form of Japanese hand stitching. It was a popular Guild workshop in 2019 taught by Nancy Ota and is likely to fill fast, perhaps because it doesn’t require a sewing machine.
This technique can be used in quilts, garments, visible mending and in many creative ways. In class, basic techniques for marking, starting and stitching will be covered.
A small sample will be made and then you’ll have a choice of stitching several free patterns as blocks or work on a purchased sampler.
This type of bag is also called a ‘komebukuro.’ They were traditionally made from scrap fabric and were filled with temple offerings, such as rice or other items during religious ceremonies, or to hold gifts destined for a close friend or relative. Komebukuro bags were hand sewn in a patchwork style using a mix of whatever fabrics on hand and closed with a cotton drawstring cord.
These versatile bags can be created from blocks made in the Guild Sashiko Workshop. OR This is a perfect project to use up extra scraps of fabric and to add your own unique style. You can be as simple or complex as you’d like. And it is fully reversible!
