Join us for an ArtWalk exhibition opening Saturday February 8th!
In its second and final iteration, The Water that Holds is an installation by Rebecca Allen and Cristina Molina that combines audio/video installation, public performance, and community
movement workshops to draw parallels between water bodies, spiritual bodies, and physical bodies. A series of corporeal water performances symbolically incarnate the contested and
celebratory aspects of the waterways surrounding Lafayette.
In an exhibition containing video works and live performances, viewers will encounter dancers outfitted in custom made-garments that resemble the topography of water and are made from conceptually relevant materials such as silk, river water, and indigo. Throughout this research process, dancers have embodied waterways such as the Mississippi River and Lake Martin and
developed gestures informed by the River’s movements (carrying, holding, diverting, flooding, draining). In addition, Allen and Molina have invited the public to participate in a movement workshop based around “inseeing”—a kind of being with elements in the environment. Hosted at the Cypress Island Preserve and placing an emphasis on the waters at Lake Martin, this workshop focused on using movement to connect, hoping that perhaps seeing with our skin creates a deeper connection and a settling inside that leaves us feeling refreshed and with new perspectives.
Overall, The Water that Holds delves into the water's life-giving force and the impacts of human intervention, acknowledging the displacement of communities and environmental degradation. However, it also carries a message of hope, using art and movement to contemplate healing and resilience in the face of colonial legacies.
In addition, Basin Art’s Bare Walls gallery space will be occupied by artist Donna Davis currently resides in New Iberia. She attended the University of Louisiana and continued her education in Pocono Lake, Pennsylvania. She began drawing at a young age and experimented with pencil, charcoal, pen and ink, and pastels, finding her love for watercolor later in her career. “Watercolor is my center and heart. I love what a simple drop of water does to the page and how water, such an essential part of Louisiana culture, adds to the images of wildlife and nature we are rich in. My work continues to evolve with mixed media traditions, and is central to my work with cultural motifs and nature subjects. I am a life-long artist, a studier of artists and art; I am grateful for the process of the canvas and color.”
Gallery hours will be from 5-8pm on January 11th. Basin Arts is located at 113 Clinton St.
