Exploring the Heart Sutra
Part Two: Seeing through Illusions
In this second session of our Heart Sutra series, Justin Kirkwood will guide us into the heart of the text itself—taking us line by line through this profound teaching.
The Heart Sutra invites us to see the world as it truly is—free of fixed identities, solid concepts, and illusions of permanence. By introducing us to the essence of emptiness, it challenges how we perceive ourselves and the phenomena around us.
But what does it mean when the Sutra declares, “Form is emptiness, emptiness is form”? And how do we understand phrases like “No eye, no ear, no nose…”? These teachings can sound abstract or even disorienting, yet they contain the key to deep insight and liberation.
In this talk, Justin will:
- Unpack the essential lines of the Heart Sutra step by step.
- Illuminate the meaning behind key phrases and concepts like “form and emptiness.”
- Offer real-life examples to help us understand emptiness not as nothingness, but as the interdependent, dynamic nature of all things.
Through this exploration, we’ll see how the Heart Sutra invites us to loosen our grip on rigid views and embrace a more fluid, interconnected way of living—freeing us to respond to life’s challenges with wisdom and compassion.

About One Community
Each month, we come together for an evening of connection and learning to deepen our understanding of the dharma and build meaningful relationships within the sangha. Led by a Namchak teacher, thought leader, or staff member, each gathering revolves around a specific theme and lasts 90 minutes.
The session begins with a dharma talk, followed by a Q&A and sometimes a brief meditation. After the 90-minute session closes, participants are welcome to stay online or in person for an optional informal discussion lasting up to 30 minutes.
We invite Learning Circles, meditation buddies, and individuals to join us, and encourage you to bring friends, family, neighbors, or co-workers along to share the experience.
