Join us for Featured Firsts at Turnagain Ceramics! Each first Friday, we hold an opening reception for a different local ceramic artist, featuring a free community throw! Our front gallery has a treasure trove of pottery and ceramic art that our studio members lovingly handcraft. From plates, mugs, and bowls to jewelry and sculpture, our gallery has it all!Our May featured artist is Miley Kakaruk. Miley joined the community at Turnagain Ceramics last summer as our inaugural Native Youth Resident. At the end of the summer, Miley stayed on as a member! This show is her first solo exhibition and is a testament to her dedication and hard work. Join us in celebrating this young artist’s accomplishment!
"Hello, my name is Miley, and my Inupiaq name is Amisiimaq. I’m from Anchorage, Alaska and my family comes from Shishmaref and Mary’s Igloo, Alaska. I’m a junior in high school, I started taking classes at school as a freshman and ever since then, I have fallen in love with pottery! Besides ceramics, I’m a gymnast, a traditional games athlete, and a youth representative in the indigenous community. I create decorative and functional pieces inspired by Inupiaq culture and my experiences as a traditional games athlete."
