Featured Artists Pat Paehua and Sylvia Carter will be exhibiting and demonstrating their art 12 - 18 January in the Joan Hardey Gallery, Dunedin Railway Station.More about Pat:
I am a retired Tradesman Painter living in Dunedin. I work in acrylics and my favourite subjects are landscapes. Currently I am focused on improving my skills as an artist.
As well as the friendly atmosphere and welcoming staff, one of the features I find very enjoyable as a new member of the Otago Art Society, is the Art Group sessions held every Thursday (anytime from 10am to 3,30pm). Artists of all levels from, beginners to experienced and well-known, enjoy a friendly relaxing day, chatting and learning. If you are really keen, you may even get some artwork done ๏
My first ever exhibition experience was with OAS during their July 2025, 149th Annual Exhibition which was an enjoyable and proud experience.
More about Sylvia:
Syliva was born in Hornchurch Essex on the outskirts of London. Most of her childhood was spend during the Blitz, sleeping every night in an Air Raid Shelter.
When her school was bombed she was sent to North Wales as an evacuee. She loved drawing and colouring in, and when she returned won a scholarship to the South East Essex County Technical College where she studied Art.
On leaving school she was regretfully unable to take up another scholarship offered by the Slade School of Art in London, instead working initially as a window dresser, and later in newspaper advertising.
On immigrating to New Zealand in 1965 with her husband Ken they encouraged their three children to enjoy art. Her eldest son told her about his art teacher Clarke Espin, and Sylvia attended his evening classed to learn how to use oil paints.
Sylviaโs paintings are now all over the world.
Syliva taught Adult Art Classes at East Otago High School for nine years. On moving to Dunedin she became involved in the Otago Art Society as an artist member, then serving on the Society Council and volunteering in the gift shop.
