Featured Artists Dayle Matthews and Hannah Bailly will be exhibiting and demonstrating their works 12 - 18 January in the Hope Gallery, Otago Art Society (OAS), Dunedin Railway Station.More about Dayle’s art:
My artworks are meditations on my life and the lives of women. In composition they are very much inspired by the blend of day to day and otherworldly scenes portrayed in Medieval illuminated manuscripts. I create little worlds filled with detailed designs which start sometimes in the fabric of long flowing garments, sometimes in the fur or feathers of animals and birds.
I am now working in the semi digital world using digital programmes to layer and collage my drawings, designs and painting.
As an OAS Featured Artist I will be demonstrating the early stages of my process. This involves the non-digital aspect of the artwork and includes drawing motifs for the surface pattern designs, creating the central figure and surroundings, watercolour painting to begin palette selection etc.
More about Hannah’s art:
Visitors to the OAS will have the opportunity to watch the bead-weaving process in action, and to speak with me about all aspects of my work. I am currently working on a series of Dunedin tile motifs from historic buildings around Dunedin. Being a member of the Otago Art Society continues to challenge me to investigate where beads can find their place among the arts.
I spent my childhood in the mountains of northern California where I found obsidian arrow- heads in the river banks, and stones of agate and jasper that I set to polishing and making into pendants.
This was the beginning of a lifelong passion. Today, I weave natural gemstones within webs of glass beads to create jewels with a mystic, old-world charm. While the adornments I make may fall into a broad category of 'jewellery', I also aspire to design pieces that challenge traditional notions of this category. Many of my designs are inspired by historical eras, and my travels through India, Europe and parts of the Middle East.
