We have a pot of sauce waiting for you.The St. Patrick's Day parade has ended, and the Irish and those who celebrate along with them have gone home to recover from their annual indulgences. However, the multi-generational Italian-American community in New Castle is just beginning to prepare for their celebration. They are dusting off their finest clothes and gearing up to celebrate the Feast of St. Joseph, the patron saint of Sicily. This celebration takes place on the Saturday closest to March 19th, and it is a big event for Italian-American revelers.
The differences between the St. Patrick's Day festivities and the St. Joseph's Day party are apparent. Rather than wearing green, the marchers in the St. Joseph's Day parade wear red. Additionally, instead of carrying shamrocks, they carry basil.
This year, we are stepping up the celebration by inviting our friends from Ellwood, the band 'D Major,' to play some of your favorite Italian/American music. They will play everything from traditional Italian favorites to standards by Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, and Louis Prima.
It's time for new traditions to start, and that time is now.
