Death is one of the most important events in our lives. We are all confronted with it, no matter who we are. We know this, and yet we repress it. Perhaps it is because of our fear of the unknown that we often act as if death does not exist. Death does not only happen on the outside - when we are dead on the outside - but also on the inside. It is an experience of body and mind. Buddhism explains this experience in detail and in fact we experience it every 24 hours: it is called the "little death" and it happens when we fall asleep. The process of falling asleep is just like the process of dying. We can use the little death to train ourselves and learn how to deal with this experience. In this way, we prepare ourselves for a fearless death. From a Buddhist perspective, death is not an absolute end, but something very special, a great opportunity for liberation. In this lecture, we will learn from Tulku Lobsang Rinpoche how death can be transformed from an enemy into a friend.
