In honor of America's 250th birthday next year, we will be reading David McCullough’s book, “1776.” It is an easily readable and gripping narrative of the pivotal year of the American Revolution, based on extensive research, drawing on both American and British archival sources and focusing on the human experiences behind the historical events. The struggles, triumphs and human emotions of soldiers and leaders alike are the heart of the story. Rather than portraying figures as distant monuments, McCullough presents them as flesh-and-blood individuals by weaving together their personal doubts, the harsh realities of war, and the fragile unity of a diverse people. The lessons of 1776 still resonate today as our nation continues to face challenges, not on battlefields, but in economies, societies, and global crises. It is a reminder that unity amidst adversity is the foundation of progress and that ordinary citizens continue to be the backbone of our democratic society.
