Come and listen to French composer Gabriel Fauré’s evocative Requiem as the late evening summer sun streams through the wonderful ‘arts and crafts’ stained glass of Haddo House Chapel on Sunday 30 June. The Requiem was written at about the same time as the Chapel was being built. So although the English William Morris-influenced furnishings of the Chapel differ in some senses from the French culture of the time, there are also similarities of outlook and culture.
Fauré was a giant figure, a distinguished organist, and the pre-eminent composer in France in the late 1800’s, and went on to be the Director of the world famous Paris Conservatoire from 1905-1920. He was highly prolific in his output, particularly in the setting of words. He wrote the Requiem in memory of his Father who died in 1885 and his Mother two years later. in 1887-9. The work was completed in 1893 and is widely regarded as his most popular work today. Fauré himself died 100 years ago in 1924, so this performance celebrates that centenary.
For this concert, the newly formed Haddo Arts Chamber Choir will be joined by the Nova Quartet to perform a special edition of the piece, arranged for string quartet, in addition to the usual organ and choir. The organist is David J Smith, soloists Katherine Williams (Soprano) and Chris Brighty(Baritone) and the performance will be conducted by Dr Roger B Williams, MBE.
