There’s so much strength and solidarity in members of marginalised communities getting together to have a joyous good time. Fat Queers Eating Cake! is a shared meal (please bring food to share, if you’re able), where you can gather with friends old and new, free of any diet talk or body shaming. TLDR:
- Saturday 15 March 1pm -3pm
- Please bring some food to share, if you are able
- Tararua Tramping Hall, 4 Moncrieff St Mt Victoria
- Free, but please register on EventFinda
- Please take a RAT before coming
- Please take some time to read the full post below for more information
WHO
This is an event for you if you’re fat, any gender and any flavour of queer. Please be assured that fat is absolutely a neutral term referring to body size in the same way that tall or brunette are also neutral terms. It’s our word to use how we like - just like queer.
There’s no tape measure at the door to determine if you’re ‘fat enough’, we just ask that smaller fats acknowledge they may have more privilege in various ways than larger fats.
- Kids: We don’t want childcare to be a barrier to attending, but this event is not specifically designed for children. There are many sharp corners and stairs that could be hazards for toddlers. Babies or more mature kids would do better - there is wifi!
- Allies: if you don’t have fat and/or queer friends to bring with you, and you’d be worried about coming alone, feel free to bring an ally with you.
WHAT
Think of it as an inside picnic (which isn’t weather-dependent and is more accessible for those who might not be able to sit on the ground). Bring some food, pop a label on so those with dietary requirements can nibble safely, make yourself a cuppa and grab a seat!
This event is absolutely free. We ask you to bring some kai to share if you’re able, but if you can’t, please don’t let that stop you from attending. If you would like to donate a little money to cover the venue cost, you are welcome to do that as well, but again, this is a free event.
FOOD
we use cake in the event title because it’s got a decadent ‘sinful’ reputation it’s fun to subvert, but all food is good food, so bring whatever makes you happy. Love to bake? Excellent, we’re into that. Garden overloaded with veges? Bring those! Learned to make amazing hummus because you don’t support genocide? Lovely! Only got time to pass by a dairy? Grab some potato chips. We will have ingredient labels to put with your food.
Please note: During the event, what you eat is your business, what anyone else eats is their business. The only kind of comments appropriate would be “oh this __ is so delicious” NOT “oh I couldn’t eat that, I’d have to go to the gym”.
WHERE:
The Tararua Tramping Club. The venue is close to major transport routes, and parking in local streets is free for up to 2 hours during the week, and all day at weekends.
ACCESSIBILITY
- This is a wheelchair accessible venue, and includes an accessible bathroom.
- There are sturdy, armless chairs, and plenty of space to maneuver around them.
- The venue is close to major transport routes, and parking in local streets is free for up to 2 hours during the week, and all day at weekends.
- The venue has natural lighting which we hope to be using. If it is a particularly dark day we may need to use the overhead lighting.
- We may play pop music, but can turn that off if requested.
- COVID-19: please take a RAT before attending, and stay home if you or anyone in your household is sick. If you’d like to come along in a mask, but wouldn’t feel safe to remove it to eat, you are still absolutely welcome to join in the chats.
- Alcohol: this is an alcohol-free event, to allow younger members of the community to attend.
WHY
I used to organise fat liberation events with my ethical clothing company House of Boom. I’ve folded that now, but still want to help provide spaces for our community to get together, have some fun, and work to overturn fatphobic bullshit at the same time. Now that I've joined the board of Wellington Pride, specifically to help make events more accessible to the 1 in 3 members of the Rainbow Community who are disabled, I thought this would be a particularly fitting event to host. Join us!
HOW
Please register for a free ticket so we know how many will be attending. If you would like to contribute koha to help with the cost of the venue, you can bring along cash on the day or ask for a bank account number. Please only do this option if it won’t cause a hardship for you.
