Fastelavn is one of the most unique traditions in Denmark. It has a lot of similarities with modern Halloween (which is a much newer tradition). You dress up and kids will go from door to door singing and receiving candy.Up until the 1800’s Danes would hit a wooden barrel with a living black cat inside - hence the tradition of “hitting the cat out the barrel”. Today the barrels are filled with candy.
We will naturally be “hitting the cat out the barrel” in the bar (minus the living cat)
The one to knock the bottom of the barrel out will be crowned “cat king” and the one to knock down the last piece of wood is crowned the “cat queen”. Besides the titles there are naturally prizes for the two winners.
So put on you best costume, bring your friends and let’s have a blast!
