About this Event
To make it in Hollywood, it takes more than beauty, brains, and talent— it takes moxie. This was especially true for women in the heyday of the studio system, a period from the 1920s to the 1950s. These spirited women captivated audiences, shaped the film industry, and remain enduring icons of classic cinema. Join Raissa Bretaña, co-author of Moxie: The Daring Women of Classic Hollywood for an in-depth look at how leading ladies such as Lauren Bacall, Bette Davis, Anna May Wong, and Marlene Dietrich used pose and performance, fashion and glamour to shape their images both onscreen and off. Raissa Bretaña is a New York-based fashion historian who works as a writer, researcher, and educator. She hosted a video series for Glamour, and appeared as a guest on Follow the Thread. She currently works at the Museum at FIT and is the author of Shoes (2021) and the forthcoming Fashion of the Gilded Age (2025), both published by Abbeville Press. Books will be available for purchase. Classic Hollywood Style is highly encouraged!
