About this Event

Join us on an experiential walking tour where we will retrace their steps and uncover the places that once defined freedom in Farmington, Connecticut.

Over 180 years ago, Mende Africans from modern-day Sierra Leone were captured and sent against their will to Cuba. They were stripped of their freedom, destined for a life of slavery. While being transported on a ship called La Amistad in 1839, the Mende, led by Sengbe Pieh, revolted, taking control of the vessel and sailing towards Long Island, New York. The survivors were recaptured and sent to trial in Connecticut. After a two-year-long trial championed by John Quincy Adams, the Supreme Court ruled that the Mende be freed. In 1841, the freed Africans were welcomed into the town of Farmington where they lived and worked for eight months, gaining funds for their eventual return to their homes in Africa.

Now you can retrace the steps of Sengbe Pieh, also known as Joseph Cinque, and the Mende Africans while exploring the people and places that provided refuge during a time of chaos and fear. Join the Farmington Historical Society and immerse yourself in a community fight for freedom. You will never look at Farmington Village the same way again!
