What is Oakwood Roots?
Community Corp., Original Save Venice, Hoopbus and Venice Vibes Entertainment have created a collaboration as mission-oriented, community advocates and partners that want to restore the First Baptist Church of Venice and from it create a new initiative of togetherness, Oakwood Roots, for the Oakwood neighborhood of Venice.
In the 1960s, the First Baptist Church of Venice was built by the Black community, for the Black community. During a time of segregation, when African Americans in Venice were restricted from crossing Lincoln or Washington Boulevards, the church became a beacon of hope, love, and unity. It offered families and friends a vital space to gather, connect, and build together when many doors remained closed to them. The First Baptist Church wasn’t just a place of worship; it was a symbol of resilience, a sanctuary where the community could flourish in an otherwise divided world.
Today, Oakwood Roots seeks to honor this rich history by refurbishing and revitalizing the First Baptist Church of Venice. Our vision is to transform this historic landmark into a vibrant, community-centered space where culture, wellness, and creativity thrive. Oakwood Roots will be a hub for small businesses, music, healthful food, healing practices, and a variety of creative and physically engaging classes. We aim to provide a place where the community can gather once again, to heal, to celebrate, and to grow. Our journey begins with the Venice Farmers’ and Wellness Market, which reflects the heart of what Oakwood Roots hopes to achieve. Through the market and other fundraising efforts, we are raising the funds to bring Oakwood Roots to life. Both the market and Oakwood Roots share a commitment to nourishing our community—through food, wellness, and opportunities to engage and connect more frequently.
