The City Market, a historic institution at the heart of downtown Indianapolis since 1821, is poised for a major revitalization that will bring new life to this iconic space. This is a generational opportunity to redevelop a block that will catalyze positive change in our downtown, connecting downtown to the Market East District and beyond. This ambitious project, led by real estate developers Gershman Partners and Citimark in partnership with the City of Indianapolis Department of Metropolitan Development and the City Market Corporation, includes the transformation of the vacant ‘Gold Building’ into 354 residential units and exciting public amenities. The redevelopment plan also features the restoration and reimagining of the City Markethouse and the historic Catacombs beneath it. The Catacombs, once part of Tomlinson Hall (1886), will be integrated into the West Plaza design where the Platform currently is, offering a unique cultural and educational experience that will showcase the history of this iconic site.
As part of this redevelopment, the City is focusing on sustainability and long-term success. The first phase includes a new design for the plaza and the historic catacombs, helping to revitalize this important area while making it a public amenity for residents and visitors alike. The project will also foster job creation and provide educational opportunities for the community, focusing on teaching the City Market's history and its significance to Indianapolis’ heritage. Local stakeholders, including vendors and businesses, will be a key part of the full-block redevelopment. The City Market has long been a place of entrepreneurship and local commerce, and we are committed to ensuring that this spirit is preserved and enhanced in the redevelopment process.
City of Indianapolis DMD is thrilled to partner with Indiana Landmarks, which will help tell the story of this historically significant site. Their expertise and passion for preservation will play a crucial role in ensuring that the history of the City Market campus is honored and shared with future generations.
