In Fare Thee Well, Poor Miss Taylor, the playwright takes the characters and events of Jane Austen’s Emma and compresses them into two real-time hours in a modern Vancouver apartment, where university student Emma Woodhouse is hosting a moving out party for her longtime roommate Anne Taylor. Things start to fall apart even before the party begins; will Emma’s fragile hubris survive? Will best friend and serial introvert Georgia Knightley stick around to pick up the pieces? This brand new play infuses all the wit and charm of the novel into a whirlwind comedy full of heart.Adriel Brandt is a playwright and audiobook narrator from Vancouver, BC. Adriel is inspired by the framework and scope of classic literature, and is an avid reader. In 2023, Adriel’s adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities was produced by Gallery 7 Theatre in Abbotsford, shortly after Adriel was seen on stage as Eustace Bassington-Bassington in the madcap comedy Jeeves Intervenes. As a Queer, disabled artist, representation is vital to Adriel’s craft, and Fare Thee Well, Poor Miss Taylor shows Adriel’s great delight in infusing classic story with modern sensibilities. Next for the stage from Adriel’s pen is a brand new take on the legends of Robin Hood: a swashbuckling comedy full of merry men, scene-eating villains, and thinly veiled trans allegory.
