Letters that will never be sent explores creative writing as a tool for survival
About this Event

Join us on the Waterfront Plaza at Brookfield Place New York for Letters That Will Never Be Sent exploring writing as a tool for survival. Participants will have the chance to work through some ideas and modes of using writing as a way of working through difficulty, using our own stories and lives as material. In this workshop, participants are invited to write a letter to someone, or something, that will never be sent. This could be a letter to a person who has died, or is no longer in their life. It could address a year – Dear 2022 – or a place – Dear High School. It could be a love letter, it could be a shopping list, it could be a poem. The intention is to place a narrative around what might be unsayable, or painful, or absurd, to give it a form, and therefore to know it better, or differently, through the act of writing.

The session creates a dedicated space for participants to write what is on their mind, separate from the worries and half-thoughts snatched at during the course of a busy day, or sleepless night. At the end of the workshop, we will reflect on the power of addressing someone, or something, in a letter that will never be received by its recipient. The resulting letters can be read to the group, if participants feel comfortable doing so. Participants will then seal their letters in envelopes, and have the option of keeping their letter, or posting it, minus an address, into a nearby post box, and in this way, letting it go.

The Facilitator

Lara Haworth is a writer, visual artist, and filmmaker. Her installations, many of which are set in dramatic, wild, or unusual spaces, often have writing at their heart: whether that’s creating a miniature library in a disused brothel where all the books are made and written by visitors to the library, co-creating works of poetry with a functioning limestone quarry, or writing the history of a national park in a wasteland site. Her works have been exhibited internationally at places including Yokohama, Japan, Toronto, Canada, and Chemnitz, Germany. Her poetry has been published in magazines including Visual Verse, Biography, LAKE, ACME, Nōd and Feels. Her new film, All the People I Hurt With My Wedding, was released on the platform She Does Filmz in April 2021. Her debut novel, The Straits, is represented by Jo Bell at Bell Lomax Moreton, and she recently finished writing her second novel, Monumenta. In October 2021 she was commissioned by Nelly Ben Hayoun Studios to write Drowning in a Sea of Love, a play text for Tour de Moon 2022. She lives in London, UK.

About The Fandangoe Skip *on tour*

Following 2021’s successful UK tour of The Fandangoe Whip, Annie Nicholson, AKA The Fandangoe Kid has partnered with Skip Gallery and CAUKIN Studio to present The Fandangoe SKIP, an ice cream kiosk made from a re-purposed skip in London and New York. The original project toured the UK offering ice cream and mental health support to diverse communities as we began to emerge from the global pandemic and all its challenges. Founded by artist Annie Nicholson, following her own experiences of grief, this project seeks to smash taboos around grief and mental health and offer an alternative space to open up the conversation, alongside a therapeutic programme curated by The Loss Project.

We are excited to bring the Fandangoe Skip on Tour to Brookfield Place New York in partnership with Brookfield Properties who are commissioning us. The New York installation will be created from a repurposed dumpster and feature a wide array of public programming, including talks, workshops, and arts activations on the Waterfront Plaza at Brookfield Place.
