About this Event

There are many risk factors that contribute to family trauma. Families’ instability is affected by physical and sexual abuse, domestic violence, mental health problems, police brutality, racism and discrimination, substance abuse, financial problems, and health-related problems including the COVID -19 pandemic impact on emotional and physical health, grief issues, and socioeconomic factors. When a family member experiences a traumatic event whether, in the home, community, school setting, or workplace, it oftentimes has a negative impact on each family member in different ways. This workshop will focus on utilizing a Trauma-Informed Care and Addiction Treatment model approach to help families work through their trauma and subsequently mend families.

Course Goals:

  • Define trauma and symptoms of trauma.
  • Review how the brains are impacted by trauma.
  • Define and identify the purpose of trauma-informed treatment.
  • List and explain the 5 principles of trauma.
  • Identify the concepts of trauma-informed care.
  • Identify necessary steps to take when assessing individuals and families who have been traumatized (do’s and don’ts).
  • Identify ways to help everyone connected to the trauma victim recognize and uncover hidden trauma (including family and staff).
  • Explain trauma-informed treatment model interventions.
  • Identify Key Ingredients for Successful Trauma-Informed Care Implementation.
  • List ways to assist families with safely identifying trauma without further harm and ways to recover from trauma.
  • List ways to implement organizational rules and procedures that reflect a trauma-informed perspective for all staff members within an organization.

Presenter:

Dr. Lucy R. Cannon is the CEO/Owner of LEJ Behavioral Health Services, LLC, a training, and consulting company in Metropolitan Atlanta. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the states of Georgia and Alabama. She has the following certifications, LCSW, CCDP-D, and MATS. Dr. Cannon has been a clinician, supervisor, director, and consultant of mental health and co-occurring disorders programs in inpatient and outpatient healthcare organizations and psychiatric hospitals in various states in the United States and Camp Zama, Japan. She is an Adjunct Professor at Clark Atlanta University Graduate School of Social Work. She is also a Facilitator/Speaker for the United States Navy Reserve Command. She is a trainer for various local and national healthcare organizations. She also serves on various healthcare organizations boards of directors, and advisory boards. She is an advocate for consumers with co-occurring disorders. She is very committed to educating students and training mental health professionals in the addiction and mental health fields.
