ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
Artist sɬə́məxʷ, Rain Pierre works collaboratively to create artwork intended to inspire. Hummingbird Takes Flight (2021) depicts a hummingbird—an animal of great personal and cultural significance—as it visits two hanging fuchsia flowers. For many Coast Salish cultures, the hummingbird is a messenger of joy and bringer of luck. Presented on the windows of Evergreen Cultural Centre, the work is a reminder to passers-by of the possibilities present all around us. Pierre is a q̓ic̓əy̓ (Katzie) First Nation visual artist and the owner and founder of RainAwakens, a seven-person arts team that produces public art and engagement events around the world.
sɬə́məxʷ, Rain Pierre is a q̓ic̓əy̓ (Katzie) First Nation artist and the owner and founder of RainAwakens, a seven-person team producing public art and engaging events around the world. Pierre discovered his love of art in 2016 and pivoted from construction inspection, with dreams of being a civil engineer, to pursuing a career as an artist and public speaker. He has travelled extensively since then, speaking in local schools and at international conferences alike. In all his work, Pierre shares stories of pursuing one’s dreams, recovery, Indigenous resilience and cultural teachings as he follows his familial legacy of advocacy. He has created many collaborative murals and art projects at local schools, as well as public artworks for the City of Surrey, the New Westminster Public Library, Pitt Meadows Regional Airport and the City of Maple Ridge.
