FAM Evening with an Expert Lecture Series

The Fredericksburg Area Museum (FAM) is pleased to announce our fall Evening with an Expert: Lecture Series presented by Evening with An Expert is sponsored by Lewis Insurance Associates. This season’s series discusses topics closely related to FAM’s current exhibitions, A Monumental Weight: The Auction Block in Fredericksburg Virginia, Linking North and South: Fredericksburg’s Historic Railroad, and Out and About: Fredericksburg’s Walk-In Closet.

Evening with an Expert will take place at the FAM (907 Princess Anne St), from 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm and will conclude with a light reception with the speaker. Lecture tickets are $20 for non-members and $10 for members.

Dr. Whitney Nell Stewart: The Past, Present, and Future of Southern Plantations – September 19, 2024

Join Dr. Whitney Nell Stewart for a conversation about the complicated history and living legacies of southern plantations. Stewart is an associate professor of history and faculty of the Edith O’Donnell Institute of Art History at the University of Texas at Dallas. Her book, This Is Our Home: Slavery and Struggle on Southern Plantations won the 2024 James Broussard Best First Book Prize from the Society for Historians of the Early American Republic and the 2024 Ramirez Family Award for Most Significant Scholarly Work from the Texas Institute of Letters. This lecture is presented in partnership with the University of Mary Washington.

Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac Railroad Historical Society - History of the R. F. & P. - October 17, 2024

The Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac (RF&P) Railroad linked the North with the South by providing rail services between Washington D.C. and Richmond from 1834 to 1991. The railroad has shaped Fredericksburg from rail lines being used by both the Union and Confederate armies to railroad improvements and the contraction of the railroad bridge in the 1920’s. Representatives from RF&P Railroad Historical Society will speak about this extensive history.

Dean Cedric Bernard Rucker: Mary Washington College’s AIDS Quilt – November 21, 2024

Made between 1991-2000, students and faculty of Mary Washington College came together to create the Mary Washington AIDS Quilts. Modeled after the NAMES Projects AIDS Memorial Quilt, this quilt features colorful, handmade panels commemorating loved ones impacted by HIV and AIDS and promoting awareness of the epidemic. Join Dean Cedric Bernard Rucker, UVA’s Senior Associate Vice President and Dean of Students and former UMW Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Student Life, to learn about the Mary Washington AIDS Quilt and the AIDS movement in Fredericksburg.
