For kids:
Elena, Lenni for short, was not ready for the fashion show that her tía signed her up for. She wanted to be a part of the popular crowd, but fashion just wasn’t her passion. She’d rather be out in the woods exploring with her dog, Luna, but she didn’t want to let down Tía Carmen. Lenni was nervous to be around a new group of friends, but there was this little spark of excitement inside her to try something new. The truth was, Lenni was NOT the most popular 4th grader at Dodson Branch Elementary and some of the other kids were far from kind to her. Are you willing to help Lenni imagine, design, and create her outfit for the fashion show and overcome her fears of the popular crowd?
For parents:
In this series of challenges, your child will imagine, design, and create his or her own outfit complete with accessories. They’ll learn how to use various technologies, such as digital design, sewing machines, and other customization tools to create their clothing and accessories. Your child will also investigate social skills such as collaboration and teamwork, communication, and conflict resolution via the story’s characters. The academic skills included in this challenge are following and giving directions (Language Arts), digital design (Science and Technology), the history of fashion (Social Studies), and measurement, calculations, and fractions (Math).

What is a challenge quest? A challenge quest focuses on 21st century skills such as problem solving, collaboration, outside-the-box and critical thinking, and innovation. This set of activities introduces a problem or mystery in a story-like journal and allows free exploration to discover new knowledge and to use tools in a different / new way. Challenges integrate academics with a child’s natural curiosity and creativity while teaching life skills via our Maker Lab Studios. Learners have an intrinsic desire to learn new things and gain new skills because we focus on one’s personal best. We encourage trying. We establish that mistakes are okay and we can learn from them. Learners build, deepen, or cement understanding by making. We define the learning goals and provide structure, scaffolds, and support for learners in the Challenge Quest Journal. We provide a Challenge Kit and sometimes an alias that aligns with the story characters.
