Beginner Birding at Burnaby Lake Regional Park to have a Sunday Funday
About this Event

Are you interested in birding? Join us for a guided bird outing for beginners at Burnaby Lake Regional Park!

Join passionate birders Dale, Julia and Sandra as they share their knowledge and passion for birds while wandering through Burnaby Lake trails, ending at Piper Spit. We’ll listen for calls and songs, enjoy discussion on topics such as bird habitat and plumage, and share tips. With Fall migration in full swing, this is a great time to see both seasonal visitors and local year-round species.

Bring your binoculars that will allow you to identify and enjoy distant birds easily. Otherwise, we will have binoculars to lend out.

Stop by the BLPA display booths to learn more about migrating birds, how to help birds, the work we do and how to get involved!

We welcome everyone, including people with disabilities, people who are Black, Indigenous or People of Color (BIPOC), and people who are Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual (LGBTQIA+). We’ll be using Burnaby Lake Regional Park trails which are accessible to wheelchair-users, people who use mobility aids, or child strollers.

We celebrated World Migratory Bird Day on October 11. This year's theme was Shared Spaces: Creating Bird Friendly Cities and Communities. We’re focusing on making our cities, villages, towns, and communities, from rural to urban, more bird-friendly. In 2025, WMBD will raise awareness about the many challenges migratory birds face due to human activities and expanding urban development. The campaign will advocate for strategic urban planning and conservation efforts that incorporate bird-friendly practices, making sure that our communities become havens for these remarkable travelers. The 2025 theme encourages action from all sectors, including national and local governments, businesses, community groups, and individuals worldwide.

What does “bird-friendly” mean?

“Bird-friendly” means making our environment safe and welcoming for birds. We can do this by planting native plants, providing clean water, and avoiding the use of harmful chemicals. By creating and protecting shared spaces, we can help birds on their long journeys and make our communities more beautiful and healthy. Throughout the year, we will explore the many actions communities can take to make their spaces more bird-friendly. We’ll provide more news about these activities at our display and how you can help Burnaby become a Nature Canada certified Bird-Friendly City!!

Please note that advance registration is required as we will have a maximum of 15 participants per outing. These outings are approximately 80 minutes in length, rain or shine.
