Cambridge City Growers is at a turning point. we ask you to attend if you can an in person gathering on September 8 at 6 PM at Parcel 6 so that we can collectively navigate this next phase for the organization.Planning, participation, and capacity on the part of many of us—all volunteers—is at an all time low.
◦ Our mailing list has many members, but very few people come to either virtual or in-person gatherings.
◦ The circumstances of food insecurity in 2020-2021 when CCG started are not the same as today
◦ However, future changes to SNAP and other benefits, plus higher food costs, means growing some of our own fresh produce is still an important way for people to get by in this economy
Here are just a few options:
1. Should CCG shut down?
2. Should we ask for proposals for micro grants from groups of neighbors who want to start or expand food gardening projects? We do have funds that could be distributed for such projects.
3. If we do not shut down our activities, how might we reorganize or re-focus to attract active member-volunteers?
The decision should be made not by a few people, but by many.
If you have ever participated, volunteered, gardened shoulder to shoulder in Cambridge, advised fellow gardeners, wrote grant applications, made a donation of any kind, received part of a CCG harvest, planted seeds in our gardens plotted the expansion of food growing over the last six years—even if you feel you had a small or temporary role, please consider coming to be part of this significant decision-making process.
