In the United States, falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries in adults aged 65 and older. In fact, more than 14 million older adults report falling every year, according to the CDC. That translates to about 1 in 4 seniors experiencing a fall annually.Falls lead to tens of thousands of deaths, many serious injuries like hip fractures and head injuries and significant healthcare costs.
The good news: Falls aren’t a normal part of aging and can be prevented by addressing risk factors like medication side effects, vision problems, muscle weakness and hazardous home environments, as well as through warm-ups, strength training, balance work, flexibility movements and safety tips.
Don’t miss the Fall Prevention Education Series to learn how to minimize your fall risk or that of an elderly person you care for, using accessible skills and techniques. Meanwhile, exercises that build strength, improve balance and coordination and increase flexibility can help prevent falls.
The South Texas Health System McAllen Trauma Department, STHS McAllen Outpatient Rehabilitation Center and Prominence Health invite you to take part in their four-part Falling Out of Danger: Fall Prevention Education Series to learn strategies to strengthen your body and improve balance, which can help to reduce your risk of falls.
