Connect with like-minded women and discover the opportunities that are available in the outdoors!Learn outdoor skills from knowledgeable women instructors during this day of fun-filled sessions provided by Dubuque County Conservation. Be ready to learn, have fun, and make new connections with other women. We are excited to bring you varying activities at this fall workshop!
Join us for educational sessions on various activities including the following:
Natural Pigments: Some of our oldest connections to our ancient ancestors are through the works of art they left behind- from cave paintings to elaborate oil paintings, these works are not only inspired by nature but are made from resources we find in the natural world as well. Learn about foraging for natural pigments and some of the paint-making processes that have connected humans and nature through artistic expression for hundreds of years.
Eco-printing: Learn how to decorate fabric with plants! We will collect flowers and leaves to make our very own decorated bandanas. Then comes the fun part... hammering the plants into the fabric! We will also learn about sustainable foraging practices and taking care of naturally dyed fabrics.
Fungi Foray: Join us to explore the woods and learn about the various shapes, colors, and roles that mushrooms play in our ecosystem. The best way to learn how to identify mushrooms is by experiencing them firsthand. Touch and smell are some of the best senses one can use to identify mushrooms. This session will cover the basics of mushroom identification, including how to differentiate between edible mushrooms, toxic mushrooms, and their common look-alikes. Additionally, we will discuss best practices for harvesting, transporting, and preserving mushrooms. Finally, we will provide you with plenty of resources to continue your mushroom education independently.
