A 5-week series teaching blues dancing for beginner and intermediate dancers!
About this Event

In this series, we will start with some common swing dancing movements, and take you on a musicality and cultural-based journey of understanding the foundations of those movements. And as we progress, we will dive deep into how that is connected to and grew out of blues dancing, as well as what makes blues dancing blues. Throughout the 5 weeks, you will be practicing and playing with moves and movements, and we will show you different approaches for how to change them to fit different music styles and aesthetics. Our aim for this series is to create an awareness, understanding and appreciation of not just blues culture, music and dance, but of the values of Black culture that shapes why blues and swing (and beyond!) is danced the way it is

This series is designed to accommodate a mix of beginner and intermediate dancers, as we believe this fosters a community-centered approach to learning.

Lead Instructor

Robin Chow

He / Him

Being a dancer who started later in life, and owing much to the discovery a hip hop tutorial video at the back of a You Got Served DVD, Robin truly believes that dance is inside every one of us. Whether it's a fully realized passion, or a whisper of curiosity, he feels that dance should always be available to our selves, whatever one's dance experience or familiarity. His dance repertoire is based on solo movement learned from a studio hip hop background, with the journey into social dancing starting with lindy hop, and over time including blues, balboa & fusion. And ever since his introduction to blues dancing in 2018, he has become a passionate practitioner and advocate of the form, and is dedicated to a continued journey of learning and sharing of blues dance and culture.
