About this Event

#HACKVAN2024 - Solving Real Problems Using Code & More in the Name of Jesus

Hosted by Vancouver

Mission & Vision

#HACKVAN2024 exists to help redemptive organizations leverage tech to accelerate their impact.

Within 48 hours, we will design, develop, and user-test MVPs to address problems faced by these organizations.

This year, we are helping strangers become friends with Pray for the Nations and other potential projects. (See Project Descriptions for more details)

Our Values
  1. Excellence: We strive to build brilliant and beautiful tech that will be honoured even when it becomes outdated.
  2. Impact: W e are other-focused. W e seek to have fun + advance our careers AND we are willing to put others before ourselves.
  3. Hope: W e face the brutal facts of reality while fully convinced we can change the world for good.

Sounds like you?

Are you highly driven and impact focused? Love to work with little guidance yet works well in teams?

A developer, designer, product manager, or area expert?

If so, we would love for you to join us!

  • Professional: If you have at least 2 years of professional experience in your field, register as a Professional.
  • Emerging Professional: If you are smart, teachable, and hungry for impact, (with 6+ months of tech experience - in co-op or personal projects), please register as an Emerging Professional.

If you would like to be a mentor or judge, thank you so much! We need a village to change the world for good ? Please email Nathan Tsai <[email protected]> to receive your complimentary ticket after being accepted.

Project Descriptions

Stranger Friend |

Pray for the Nations is an organization helping Christians connect and love their global neighbours.

We will explore the question: how can we share the love of Jesus with refugees, immigrants, and international students by addressing their practical needs?

Project brief incoming.

Potential Projects:

There are two to three other potential projects, including one to help people start daycares.

Who We Are

Our world is filled with chaos. Many people are panicking, despairing, or simply ignoring.

We're different. We look chaos right in the eyes and proceed: building order.

We innovate. We create new products, retrofit old processes, and lead digital transformation.

#HACKVAN2024 will be the 5th hackathon we have organized. Previously, we hosted: #HACK2021 - Vancouver, #HACK2022 - Vancouver, #HackPoverty23, and #HACKVAN2023).

We come from all faith backgrounds (Muslim, atheists, New Age, and more) and are led by Christians.

Our leaders' faith means two things:

  1. We will pray at the hackathon: inviting God into our work.
  2. We will work with eager expectation of a world as God designed it:

A world where youth can wake up without worry or hurry, exit their home and be greeted by friends all around, and eat dinner with loved ones in joy and peace.

FAQ

What does it mean for this event to be hosted in "the name of Jesus"?

It means we will sometimes pray and reference Christ's teachings. You can think about it as a cultural experience. See "Who We Are" for more details :)

Can I come if I am an atheist, Muslim, Sikh, or simply not a Christian?

Absolutely! In the last two hackathons we hosted, about 50% of people came from a religious background that was not Christian. E.g. Muslims, atheists, and others.

Can I sign up with my friends? Will we be split up?

It depends on your experience.

If university students or recent graduates, we will encourage you to break up because we want to distribute the "emerging professionals" among the professional participants.

This distribution will also help you grow your professional network.

What should I bring?

We recommend you bring:

  • your laptop
  • a notebook

If sleeping over:

  • a sleeping bag
  • two changes of clothes
  • a tooth brush & tooth paste

We also recommend bringing a second keyboard (as thirty monitors are provided in the co-working space).

(Most) food and snacks are provided.

I am a designer: what am I going to be doing?

Thank you so much for signing up! We always have fewer designers than programmers.

During the hackathon, you will join a team and develop three prototypes:

1. A paper sketch - created in collaboration with the client on Friday night; to articulate the workflow of the app

2. Wireframes - to articulate the structure of web app

3. High fidelity prototype - to articulate the colours and styles of the app

Do I need to provide my own meals?

Due to our generous sponsors (and your ticket fees), we can provide all the meals for the event. Praise God!

Finances are a little tight right now. Can I still come?

Yes! We don't want cost to be a barrier to anyone wanting to join.

If cost is a barrier, please text me at [email protected].

Participant: Do I need to be there the entire time?

Yes*.

*unless you want to want to go home to sleep.

Seriously though, we would like you to stay the entire time because that's part of the fun of hackathons.

We understand if you want to go home for a bit though.

Mentor/Judge: I can't come for most of the weekend. Can I still be involved?

Yes!

Mentors: We ask you to come on Friday night (5:30 - 9 pm), Saturday afternoon (1 - 3 pm), and Sunday afternoon (2 - 4 pm).

Be prepared to share your experience building technology!

Judges : we ask you to come on Sunday, from 2 pm to 4 pm.

Be prepared to provide insights on the results of the projects!

Can I bring a friend?

If wanting to participate, your friend must have a ticket (due to the size of the location and number of workstations).

If wanting to just drop by, email Nathan at [email protected].

Can I bring a second screen?

No, I would recommend against it. Every workstation already has a second screen, but I would suggest bringing an extra keyboard, a laptop stand, and a mouse.

What does the co-working space look like?

I'm glad you asked! Generously sponsored by Inbox Booths, here's a 360 capture of the space on Google Maps.
