The Practice of the Presence of God, Brother Lawrence

The story of “Nacho Libre” is loosely based on a true one, that of the Mexican priest, Rev. Sergio Gutiérrez Benítez, who began a career as a masked luchador to support the orphanage he directed. Fray Tormenta (“Friar Storm”), Fr. Benítez’ luchador name, retired in 2011 after wrestling for 23 years in service of the orphans he loved. The comedy of Nacho Libre’s version of the story of Fr. Benítez gives a human face to what is often considered is attractive yet unattainable in saintly zeal and desire, thereby inspiring us to believe that such service to God and neighbor is, in fact, a gift that God still gives the willing.

Faith, Friends, and Film is brought to you by The Door at St. John the Divine.
