Amy Petrongelli
Associate Professor of Voice
Lauded in the New York Times for her “admirable fluidity,” soprano Amy Petrongelli’s diverse performance career wholeheartedly embraces both traditional and contemporary repertoire. In 2020, Amy was honored with an Professional Achievement Award from the University of Michigan for her significant contributions to the field of music performance.
Amy has been a featured performer for organizations such as the Five Boroughs Music Festival, The Block, the Casement Fund Recital Series, the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival, as well as national and regional conferences for the National Association for Teachers of Singing. Her commitment to musical collaboration has led her to fellowships at the Tanglewood Music Festival, Fall Island Vocal Arts Seminar, the Eighth Blackbird Creative Lab, and New Music on the Point. Past operatic roles have included Adina in L’elisir d’amore, Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi, Tytania in A Midsummer’s Night Dream, and Amy in Little Women. An avid recitalist, Amy has had the honor of performing with some of today's leading collaborative pianists including Kathleen Kelly, Martin Katz, JJ Penna, and Alan Smith. Most recently, Amy began recording her first solo album with long-time collaborator, pianist Blair Salter. The album, entitled "I am in need of music," celebrates a lineage of female art song composers from the United States & Canada.
Alongside her love for traditional repertoire, Amy frequently works with composers to bring alive new music for the voice and has premiered over 70 new works. Past collaborations have included leading contemporary ensembles and organizations such as Eighth Blackbird, Houston Grand Opera’s HGOco, Bent Frequency, Alarm Will Sound, Latitude 49, the Metropolis Ensemble, New American Voices, and AEPEX Contemporary Performance. Amy is also the vocalist and a founding member of the Khemia Ensemble, an ensemble dedicated to reflecting diverse perspectives in contemporary classical chamber music through immersive, multimedia performances. Khemia has been featured in venues and festivals including Chamber Music America, National Sawdust, the Mizzou International Composers Festival, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Strange Beautiful Music, New Music Gathering, the Mizzou International Composer Festival, and the Biennial New Music Festival in Cordoba, Argentina. As co-artistic director for the Khemia Ensemble from 2020-2022, Amy helped to commission and curate the ensemble’s sophomore album, Intersections (Ravello Records).
A passionate educator, Amy is currently a member of the voice faculty at the University of Georgia, having previously taught at Baylor University, Penn State University, Eastern Michigan University, and the University of Akron. To further her understanding of the human voice, Amy has sought out additional pedagogy certifications from the Shenandoah CCM Vocal Pedagogy Institute & Somatic Voicework Institute. She is the Director of the Collaborative Piano Institute Vocal Academy summer program at Louisiana State University and has held guest faculty positions at the Brancaleoni International Music Festival and the International Choral Conducing Masterclass Program. Offstage, Amy loves nothing more than to dig into a good book, discover a new recipe, or take a long walk with her rescue pup, Luna.
