ABOUT THIS EVENT
This programme looks back in reverse chronology at the Russian tradition of writing in the grand manner, of sweeping gestures on a large canvas. Shostakovich’s Op. 8 Trio from 1923 and Rachmaninov’s First Trio élégiaque from 1892, both works in a single movement, were written when both composers were students and still in their teens. Tchaikovsky wrote his epic Piano Trio, Op. 50, in 1882, in memory of his close friend mentor, Nikolai Rubinstein.
