Title: Microbes in Our Water: Intriguing Insights into an Unseen World.
Description: An often-unseen world of microbes is teeming around us. Microbes are in the air that we breathe, the soil we stand on and the water we use for drinking and recreation. Here we present the types of bacteria found using next generation sequencing of samples taken from two Otterbein University rain gardens and the surrounding soil and discuss implications for storm water and runoff management. We will also discuss our latest research being conducted along Alum Creek with the goal of assessing the diversity of bacteria and archaea at several locations where we have sampled both water and sediment. The diversity of microbes that are present can be used as an important indicator of water quality
