First aid is a vital skill that all foster carers should have an awareness of. This course is designed for foster carers who want to receive training in paediatric first aid. It will cover the methods of dealing with various first aid emergencies, and will look at the process of accident reporting and action planning. This comprehensive course is delivered in one day.
The main learning objectives of the course are as follows:
1. To understand the role of a first aider, accident reporting, and the first aid box
2. To understand action planning in an emergency
3. To understand the primary and secondary assessments
4. To know the recovery position
5. To know infant, child, and adult resuscitation (CPR)
6. To know the correct action for infant, child, and adult choking
7. To know how to manage head injuries
8. To understand allergic reactions and anaphylactic shock
9. To be aware of the treatment for bleeding, shock, and burns
10. To be aware of the treatment for sprains, strains, and fractures
11. To know how to manage poisoning, bites, and stings
12. To know how to manage eye, nose, and ear obstructions
13. To be aware of childhood conditions
14. To know how to manage asthma and respiratory infections
15. To know how to manage diabetes, sickle-cell anaemia, and meningitis
16. To gain an understanding of epilepsy and convulsions
17. To gain an understanding of hypo/hyperthermia
18. Examples of accidents where you don't need to call 999
19. CPR practice on Adults
This course meets the Training, Support, and Development Standards as outlined in The Fostering Services (England) Regulations 2011.
