About this Event

Join the Village Square Fabric Art group and Artist as Changemaker Resident, Stephanie Banszky, on May 16 for the showcase of their piece titled "Tree of Life and Community." They will discuss the story and meaning behind the project, showcase the physical fibre art piece and accompanying digital component. Listen to talks from the artists. Share your own stories of connection and disconnection that we can add to our digital quilt!

This Village Square Fabric Art Group began as a “seed” of an idea in Fall 2022. Over the last two years, Artist Changemaker Stephanie Banszky partnered with Village Square Leisure Centre Community Hub to host a regular bi-weekly Fabric Art group that looked deeper at the idea of "Connection and Disconnection." Together we had been noticing a “disconnection” as a larger, emerging problem across the city. Disconnection from each other, from our community networks, from our groups of people and supports. We have also had a longer journey of disconnection from our traditional fibre heritages, cultural practices and ways of being. This has led to culture loss and the devaluation of fabric in our society. We are now in a disgraceful fibre waste situation that is threatening the ecological well being of our planet, with enough clothing waste to clothe the next SIX generations of humans!

We discussed three main areas related to "connection/disconnection":

  • Disconnection from traditional fibre practices and value of fibre has led to the fast fashion environmental crisis we are in today and loss of traditional sustainable practices.
  • Disconnection from culture/history due to displacement, immigration, and cultural genocide has left us culturally depleted and we have lost identities, traditions, stories and elder guidance in practice.
  • Disconnection from each other, our communities, and our support networks has led to increased polarization, and decrease in empathy and willingness to understand.

From this we developed the statement:

"Using the arts, how might we weave a deeper connection with ourselves, each other and the environment."
