2/10 - I Hold The Lion's Paw
Jon Hassell meets Ornette Coleman, meets Laurie Anderson. I Hold the Lion’s Paw sounds familiar and, at the same time, like nothing else you’ve ever heard.
The band features:
Reuben Lewis - Trumpet and Synthesiser
Emily Bennett - Vocals and Synthesiser
Adam Halliwell - Bass Guitar
Ronny Ferella - Drums
9/10 - Mia Barham Quintet
Mia Barham is an exciting saxophonist and flautist from Melbourne, Australia. Mia has performed with renowned jazz artists from around the globe including Nduduzo Makhatani, Ingrid Jenson and Andrea Keller. She has two releases to her name, both of which have been featured on ABC Jazz, PBS and have been performed at prestigious Melbourne venues The Jazzlab and Tempo Rubato. The Mia Barham Quintet features some of Melbourne’s finest improvisers, performing a collection of all the band members compositions.
The band features:
Mia Barham - Alto Saxophone and Flute
Dean Kalait - Tenor Saxophone
Dan Waddingham - Guitar
Claire Abougelis - Bass
Quinn Knight - Drums
16/10 - Robbie Melville Quartet
The Robbie Melville Quartet is the latest project from the guitarist and composer, winner of the Instrumental Category of the 2018 International Song Competition. With the sympathetic rhythm section of bassist Tamara Murphy and drummer Maddison Carter, and featuring Zoe Knighton on cello, the quartet explore a juxtaposition of heavily structured arrangements with free spirited extemporisation, informed in equal measure by contemporary jazz and Norwegian folk, the sparse and playful writings of Richard Brautigan, the photography of Viktor Kolář, the film soundtracks of Mark Orton. Delicate, humourous, ethereal, intimate and quirky. The band features:
Robbie Melville - guitar
Zoe Knighton - cello
Tamara Murphy - double bass
Maddison Carter - drums
23/10 - Tom/Holly/ Ronny Trio
Holly, Tom, and Ronny come together to explore the possibilities of a bassless trio, inspired by Paul Motian's melodically driven trio albums of the early 2000's. This debut gig will feature all new material, with the focus on beauty in simplicity.
The band features:
Holly Moore - Alto Saxophone
Tom Allen-Graham - Guitar
Ronny Ferella - Drums
30/10 - Polymorphic
Polymorphic is Maddison Carter's latest venture, drawing upon his fascination for rhythmic complexity. Whilst blurring the boundaries of jazz and contemporary classical music, the compositions juxtapose tonal and atonal threads. The music shows an affinity for constructed, organised sonic space alongside vast improvisation. Electronic manipulation, tight interlocking rhythms, and vibraphone craft the distinct sound of this ensemble.
The band features:
Maddison Carter - Drums, Vibraphone, Percussion
Flora Carbo - Alto Saxophone, Bass Clarinet, & Effects
Niran Dasika - Trumpet, Piccolo Trumpet, Synthesiser, & Effects Isaac Gunnoo - Double Bass & Electric Bass
Jessica Lindsay Smith - Flute
Imogen Cygler - Violin & Effects
