In 2002 ABC began airing a TV program called Extreme Makeover. Individuals were selected to receive extensive makeovers. The extreme part of the makeovers involved undergoing the surgeon’s scalpel for plastic surgery.In 2003 ABC started a spinoff called Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Instead of making over bodies through surgery, families’ houses are torn down and new ones are rebuilt in their place. Other shows with similar themes have hit the air waves since.
Why are we fascinated with makeovers? Part of the success of these shows is our secret desire to make changes in our own lives.
A magazine cover promises an article by Dr. Phil on “Secrets to Making Lasting Changes.” There is something wrong or missing in our lives that we yearn for perhaps a new home or a new face with the hope of making a new life.
But radically changing your face or your place is not going to change you. The best makeover is the most extreme makeover that involves far more than changing your outward appearance. It is a radical transformation from the inside out. God has His secrets on how to give you an extreme makeover.
The TV series, “Home Improvement”, which ran from 1991 to 1999, was about Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor the host of a TV home improvement show “Tool Time”. Tim had the particular male fascination with tools. The more powerful the power tool the better.
Tim could take a humble riding lawn mower and turn it into a hot rod racer. But usually Tim’s souped up power tools ended up causing havoc and Tim ending up visiting the hospital. Tim’s hospital visits were so frequent that the staff knew him by name.
Bruce Springsteen described in the song “Hungry Heart” the condition of many lives, “Like a river that don’t know where it’s flowing, I took a wrong turn and I just kept going.”
To change the course and destination of any life is like trying to change the course of a river. You certainly wouldn’t want a Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor operating on you to change your life.
To make over our lives, to make real lasting changes requires a power beyond ourselves and a skill beyond the best surgeon.
