Hot Tequila. You’re feeling grumpy. You need a holiday to cheer you up. You want to sing each morning for 3 hours and then again in the evening for another hour. You want expert tuition by one of the UK’s leading lights in choral conducting. Someone like Gavin Carr, for instance, the conductor of the Philharmonia Chorus, the Bournemouth Symphony Chorus and the Bath Minerva Choir. When it comes to singing and conducting, Gavin really knows his oranges.
Talking of oranges makes you think of Seville. You start daydreaming of balmy evenings and apertivi in romantic squares filled with citrus and Jacaranda blossom. You think of Federico García Lorca and Manuel de Falla, Flamenco and Spanish guitars. As your mind drinks in the evening colours and floral fragrances, you drift into a deep sleep in a vast, luxuriant bed.
When you wake, you’re in a beautiful bedroom. You’re unsure whether it’s a film set or a hotel, but it oozes style and comfort. Through a partially closed curtain, you can see the deep blue of an Andalusian sky.
Your mind wanders again. You’re standing in an idyllic Patio Sevilliano, and there’s a buzz in the air – no, it’s not your room’s air-conditioning unit; it’s something far more exciting. You feel like a Carthusian horse, champing at the bit. You’re about to sing in a concert, and the atmosphere is electric.
You look up and see an audience of locals waiting expectantly. Gavin (your conductor) catches your eye. He smiles – you relax. Then the music starts, you breathe deep and sing like you’ve never sung before. You feel the passion and heat of Spain cursing through your veins like hot Tequila. Your head is full of Mudéjar stars and Sevillanas rhythms. You’re having an out-of-body experience, and you’re loving every moment.
The concert ends. The word’ ¡ole!’ spins around your head like a Spotify playlist on loop. You smile a deep, satisfied smile, and then you drink a deep, satisfying gin and tonic. Over dinner, you laugh and reminisce with your singing besties about your Seville choral holiday experience. The music, the concert, and maybe even Spain itself have brought you and your group close. It’s a bond you will keep for always.
