Exposure Therapy: Making Portraits of Strangers

Date: Monday, September 9th 2024

Time: 10:00 AM - 17:00 PM(Central European Time)

Location: Edinburgh, Scotland

"I feel like I’ve genuinely had a huge mindset shift that will not only help me in my photographic practice but in all areas of my life." - , workshop participant.

Have you ever encountered someone on the street you wanted to make a portrait of but hesitated? Maybe you made the portrait, but it didn't capture what you'd envisioned. This universal fear is something I've worked through and continue to manage. I crafted this workshop to share the techniques that have worked for me.

Regardless of your level of experience, we'll work on photographic technique, overcoming nerves, improve self-talk, and foster a deeper connection with your mind and your subjects.

Shifting focus from camera settings to the psychology of connection, we explore the mental approach to photography—aiming for a significant mindset shift that enhances both your photographic practice and life. Forget the countless debates over the best camera gear; the real key to elevating your photography resides in those vital six inches behind the camera: your mind.

We'll also delve into the legal, ethical, and moral dimensions of street photography. You'll have ample opportunity to observe how I operate, progressing at your own pace until you're ready to make portraits yourself.

Who Should Take This Workshop and Why?

This workshop is for anyone with a camera and a desire to make portraits. Whether you're a seasoned photographer or a novice, you'll gain psychological insight into your process. You'll boost your confidence, expand your comfort zone, sharpen your observational skills, and learn to cultivate positive self-talk. You'll also gain strategies to manage social anxiety and fear of rejection.

By integrating mindfulness into your photography process, you'll create more thoughtful and emotionally impactful portraits. You'll connect with fellow photographers and perfect strangers, fuel your passion for photography, and get physical and mental exercise.

What to Expect

We'll gather at the venue over a great cup of coffee for a friendly introduction and a discussion on the theory behind the practice. At this time, I'll also outline the structure of the day. We'll then set off on foot to make photographs. You'll observe as I make portraits, reflecting on each encounter until you feel ready to try for yourself.

Questions and discussion are encouraged as we go along. You'll receive feedback on the images you make and on your approach to the subjects.

This workshop aims to extend your comfort zone—you won't be thrown out of the nest. Rather, you'll decide when you're ready to take the leap and make a portrait. I'll be right there with you until you feel ready.

There will be time for a sit-down lunch break; please note that food and drinks are not included in the workshop fee.
