Figure majeure de l’Art de l’Affiche et de l’Illustration contemporaines, Laurent Durieux a toujours été fasciné par la Bande dessinée. En témoigne son remarquable travail de coloriste dans l’album Le Dernier Pharaon, un tome « hors-série » de Blake et Mortimer dessiné par François Schuiten.
Dans La Double Exposition (éd. Blake et Mortimer ; textes de Sonja Shillito et James Huth), Durieux est aux commandes cette fois. Il plonge les deux héros créés par E-P Jacobs dans un univers original et captivant où son excellence fait mouche : le rétrofuturisme.
L’illustrateur nous emporte dans d’hallucinantes micro-aventures, auxquelles semblent condamnés Francis Blake et Philip Mortimer. Miniaturisé par les canons à neutrons du Télétransporteur, le duo se retrouve captif dans une ville futuriste régentée par Miloch, pourtant décédé, aidé de Septimus, Voronov et d’une multitude d’Olrik. Voici nos deux héros emprisonnés au cœur des maquettes du Futurama créé pour l’Exposition universelle de New-York en 1939-1940.
La Galerie Champaka a le privilège d’exposer l’ensemble des fascinantes illustrations de La Double Exposition, ainsi que de subtils crayonnés de recherches et des tirages ultra-limités d’impressions aux encres pigmentaires.
Difficile de ne pas partager l’avis de François Schuiten : C’est l’histoire de Blake et Mortimer que tout le monde veut lire !

Laurent Durieux, een grote figuur in de hedendaagse affiche- en illustratiekunst, is altijd al gefascineerd geweest door strips. Daarvan getuigt zijn opmerkelijk werk als kleurder voor het album De laatste Farao een “buiten reeks” album van Blake en Mortimer getekend door François Schuiten.
In De Dubbele Expo (uitg. Blake en Mortimer, tekst van Sonja Shilito en James Huth) staat Durieux zelf aan het roer. Hij dompelt de twee helden, gecreëerd door E-P Jacobs in het originele en boeiende universum waarin hij uitblinkt: het retrofuturisme.
De illustrator neemt ons mee in de hallucinerende micro-avonturen waartoe Francis Blake en Philip Mortimer gedoemd lijken. Geminiaturiseerd door het neutronenkanon van de Teletransporter zit het duo gevangen in een futuristische stad geregeerd door Miloch, nochtans overleden, met de hulp van Septimus, Voronov en een massa Olrik’s. Onze twee helden zitten opgesloten in het hartje van de Futurama schaalmodellen, gecreëerd voor de New York Wereldtentoonstelling van 1939-1940.
Galerij Champaka heeft het grote voorrecht het geheel van fascinerende illustraties van De Dubbele Expo voor te stellen naast subtiele potloodschetsen en erg beperkte kunstdrukken met kleurinkt.
Het is moeilijk niet François Schuiten’s mening te delen: Het is het Blake en Mortimer verhaal dat iedereen wil lezen!

A major figure in contemporary poster art and illustration, Laurent Durieux has always been fascinated by comics. His remarkable work as the colourist on the album Le Dernier Pharaon, a special edition of Blake and Mortimer illustrated by François Schuiten, is proof of this.
In Double Exposure (published by Blake and Mortimer; texts by Sonja Shillito and James Huth), Durieux takes the reins. He plunges the two heroes created by E.P. Jacobs into an original and captivating universe where his forté for retro-futurism truly shines.
The illustrator sweeps us away into the sort of dream-like micro-adventures, which Francis Blake and Philip Mortimer seem doomed to experience. Miniaturised by the neutron cannons of the Teleporter, the duo finds themselves captive in a futuristic city ruled by Miloch, who is supposedly dead, aided by Septimus, Voronov, and a multitude of Olriks. Here are our two heroes, trapped within the models of Futurama, created for the 1939-1940 New York World's Fair.
The Champaka Gallery has the privilege of exhibiting all the fascinating illustrations from La Double Exposition, as well as subtle preliminary sketches and ultra-limited edition prints using pigment inks.
It's hard not to agree with François Schuiten: This is the Blake and Mortimer story everyone wants to read!
