For some yoga is stretching for others it's meditation and for others it may be chanting and worship. However, yoga offers us a way of life that can be much wider reaching and transformational and in this workshop, as well as an physical yoga practice we'll look beyond the yoga poses and explore the first two of the Eight Limbs of Yoga; the Yamas and Niyamas.
Wait, what are the Eight Limbs of Yoga? you might be asking.
Each 'limb' describes a difference aspect of our yoga practice:
Yamas (ethical principles)
Niyamas (self-observances)
Asana (poses)
Pranayama (breathing techniques)
Pratyahara (sense withdrawal)
Dharana (concentration)
Dhyana (meditation)
Samadhi (enlightenment)
We might start to practice yoga because of the physical benefits but over time we may begin to see it helps to cultivate a state of focus, awareness, mindfulness, and calm that extends beyond the mat and into daily life.
In this workshop we'll discuss the Eight Limbs of Yoga and specifically the 5 Yamas and 5 Niyamas. What they are, what they mean, how we might incorporate them into our daily life but also our physical practice on the mat.
We'll then move through our physical yoga practice using the Yamas and Niyamas as our theme. I'll encourage you to think about how you can apply the Yamas and Niyamas to your own practice, fostering a deeper, more meaningful experience on the mat.
We'll finish with an extended Yoga Nidra where I will lead you through a guided meditation. Bring props, pillows and/or blankets to make yourself comfortable.
