Exploring Sonic Practices: Building and Composing with Contact Microphones

This hands-on workshop, taking place at dot.wip space and led by George Moraitis and Dimitra Kousteridou, explores the intersection of sound art, electroacoustic composition, and DIY instrument-making through the use of contact microphones. Participants, including musicians interested in exploring their instruments, sound artists, composers, and makers, as well as beginners with no prior experience in composition or electronic hardware, will engage in a series of creative and technical exercises designed to deepen their understanding of sound as both material and process.
Throughout the workshop, attendees will build their own piezoelectric contact microphones, gaining insight into the mechanics of sound capture and amplification. They will experiment with unconventional recording techniques, using their custom-built microphones to explore and document sonic textures from instruments, objects, and environmental surfaces. Field recording and digital sound transformation will play a key role as participants manipulate and sculpt recorded material into new electroacoustic compositions. Additionally, they will be introduced to DAW-based composition, sound processing, and spatialization, using digital tools to expand their sonic vocabulary.
The culmination of the workshop will remain open-ended, allowing participants to develop their own creative paths. There will be a possibility of creating a collective electroacoustic piece, incorporating recorded sounds, instrumental textures, and environmental elements. Alternatively, participants may choose to integrate their microphones or compositions into a sound sculpture, sound installation, or site-specific work, expanding their practice beyond conventional formats. Encouraging an experimental and exploratory approach to listening, recording, and composing, this workshop offers an immersive and hands-on experience for those interested in discovering new ways of engaging with sound!

Εξερευνώντας Ηχητικές Πρακτικές: Κατασκευή και Σύνθεση με Μικρόφωνα Επαφής
Αυτό το πρακτικό εργαστήριο, που θα πραγματοποιηθεί στο dot.wip space και θα καθοδηγηθεί από τους Δήμητρα Κουστερίδου και Γιώργο Μωραΐτη, εξερευνά τη διασταύρωση της ηχητικής τέχνης, της ηλεκτροακουστικής σύνθεσης και της DIY κατασκευής ηχητικών οργάνων μέσω της χρήσης μικροφώνων επαφής. Απευθύνεται σε μουσικούς που θέλουν να διευρύνουν τη σχέση τους με το όργανό τους, ηχητικούς καλλιτέχνες-ιδες, συνθέτριες-τες και δημιουργούς, καθώς και αρχάριους χωρίς προηγούμενη εμπειρία στη σύνθεση ή τα ηλεκτρονικά, μα με επιθυμία να εξερευνήσουν τον ήχο ως υλικό και διαδικασία.
Κατά τη διάρκεια του εργαστηρίου, οι συμμετέχοντες θα κατασκευάσουν τα δικά τους πιεζοηλεκτρικά μικρόφωνα επαφής, αποκτώντας γνώσεις για τη μηχανική της καταγραφής και της ενίσχυσης του ήχου. Θα πειραματιστούν με μη συμβατικές τεχνικές ηχογράφησης, χρησιμοποιώντας τα μικρόφωνά τους για να εξερευνήσουν και να καταγράψουν ηχητικές υφές από μουσικά όργανα, αντικείμενα και περιβαλλοντικές επιφάνειες. Κεντρικό ρόλο τη δεύτερη μέρα, θα παίξουν η ηχογράφηση πεδίου και ο ψηφιακός μετασχηματισμός ήχου, καθώς οι συμμετέχοντες θα εισαχθούν στη σύνθεση μέσω DAW, την επεξεργασία και τη χωρική τοποθέτηση του ήχου διαμορφώνοντας ηχογραφημένο υλικό σε νέες ηλεκτροακουστικές συνθέσεις.
Η ολοκλήρωση του εργαστηρίου θα έχει ανοιχτή μορφή, επιτρέποντας στους συμμετέχοντες να αναπτύξουν τις δικές τους δημιουργικές κατευθύνσεις. Υπάρχει η δυνατότητα δημιουργίας ολιγόλεπτων ηλεκτροακουστικών έργων σε ομάδες, ενώ εναλλακτικά, οι συμμετέχοντες μπορούν να ενσωματώσουν τα μικρόφωνά τους ή τις συνθέσεις τους σε ηχητικά γλυπτά, ηχητικές εγκαταστάσεις ή site-specific έργα, επεκτείνοντας την πρακτική τους πέρα από τις συμβατικές μορφές. Ενθαρρύνοντας μια πειραματική και διερευνητική προσέγγιση στην ακρόαση, την ηχογράφηση και τη σύνθεση, το εργαστήριο προσφέρει μια βιωματική και πρακτική εμπειρία σε όσα ενδιαφέρονται να ανακαλύψουν νέους τρόπους αλληλεπίδρασης με τον ήχο!

Bios:
George Moraitis is an Athens-based multimedia artist. His practice investigates the space between sound sculpture, audiovisual installations, two-dimensional works and performance. His multi-layered works incorporate sound and found objects which are often accompanied by video, photography, screen prints, performance and computer-controlled interactive installations. Sound - itself a primary medium of his works - takes the form of acoustic and psychoacoustic explorations of the body, sculpture and vision in intersections of the peculiarities of perception, materiality and technology. Working with sound, installations and performance, Moraitis proposes narratives aiming to disrupt memory, experience and a sense of history, expressing thus the underlying tensions within our contemporary mode of living: the multiplicity and fragmentation of its languages.

Dimitra Kousteridou(GR) is composer, researcher and sound artist, currently lives and works in Athens, GR. Her work is driven by a desire to invent a language in composition that examines tactile and sound aspects within site-specific installations and performances, originating from improvisation. Through multidisciplinary forms that include ephemeral situations and fractures of objects, she creates a space for research while using the sound and natural attributes of materials in time. Recently working on improvised sound compositions with handmade instruments (interactive sound circuits). She has presented her research at conferences and festivals, solo and group exhibitions in Greece, Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal, Norway, Lebanon, Serbia, and the United Kingdom. She is a founding member of the experimental intermediate project “6.8KOhm Improvisation Series,” an ongoing improvisation action, in collaboration with musicians and artists.
