About this Event

The Exploring Health Equity Beyond IBD Diagnosis Lunch & Learn Series program is a pivotal initiative designed to tackle significant health disparities affecting underserved African American and marginalized populations in South St. Petersburg. Through engaging sessions led by healthcare professionals and community partners, this program aims to empower participants with essential knowledge and resources related to Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD). Each session will be facilitated by a community partner or healthcare professional with extensive knowledge and experience in Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Nutrition and Diet, and Health Equity.


Topics covered include:


  • Emotional Wellness & Coping with IBD
  • What Is IBD?
  • Managing Your Diet and IBD
  • IBD Advocacy


Participants will enjoy a nutritious lunch provided free of charge, fostering a supportive environment for learning and community engagement. By focusing on these critical areas, the series seeks to enhance participants' understanding of IBD management, emotional resilience, dietary strategies, and advocacy efforts. Our goal is to equip individuals with the tools and support needed to navigate their healthcare journey effectively, promoting better health outcomes and improved quality of life within our community. Understanding IBD (Dr. Carolina Martinez, FACS)

During this series Dr. Carolina Martinez will discuss Understanding Inflammatory Bowel Disease(IBD) and how this condition if not manage can turn into Colon Cancer. Dr. Martinez is on the medical staff at Tampa General Hospital as an Assistant Professor of Surgery with the University of South Florida’s Colon and Rectal Surgery Division. She is a fellowship trained surgeon with expertise in management of both benign and malignant colorectal disorders. Dr. Martinez uses minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic techniques as well as advanced endoscopic interventions to manage patients with colorectal tumors, inflammatory bowel disease and pelvic floor dysfunctions. Dr. Martinez is double board certified in General Surgery and Colorectal Surgery and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Managing Your Diet & IBD (Wendy Wesley, RD)

During this series Wendy will discuss the importance of Managing Your Diet & IBD . Wendy Wesley is a registered dietitian and licensed nutritionist who works to improve the health of the community. She is licensed in Florida and serves St. Petersburg, Tampa and Clearwater.

She holds a Master of Science certificate in Human Nutrition from Iowa State University and a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition from the University of Colorado. She is a former Baycare clinical dietitian.

She is rated as one of St. Petersburg’s and Tampa Bay’s best nutritionists and dietitians with excellent client reviews and community awards like the 2022 (winner) and 2023 (finalist) Best of the Bay’s “Best Nutritionist” by Creative Loafing.

IBD Advcacy: Building Skills To Bridge Health Gaps

During this series Stephanie will discuss how to advocate and how to navigate through the healthcare system. Stephanie Wynn is a 2X Author, IBD Survivor, and President of the Stephanie A. Wynn Foundation, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non profit organization. To advance health equity and eradicate healthcare and financial disparities in underserved African American and marginalized communities suffering from Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, particularly Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s Disease,through targeted educational outreach and financial literacy programs.

Stephanie is the driving force behind the Stephanie A. Wynn Foundation. Inspired by her personal battle with Crohn’s Disease and a near-death experience in 2021, which lead to the establishment of the foundation to enhance the health and wellness of economically disenfranchised African Americans and other marginalized communities afflicted with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). She’s on a mission to positively impact the lives of 10,000 underserved IBD patients by providing quality healthcare, nutritious foods and essential financial resources.
