Bounded by Willow, Valley, Pine and Auburn Streets, the Cemetery occupies 20 acres one block southeast of the SNHU Arena. City records indicate that the Valley Cemetery land was donated to the City by Amoskeag Manufacturing Corporation in 1841 to meet the needs of Manchester’s growing population, the cemetery was laid out in the style of a garden cemetery, carefully landscaped to blend the beauty of nature with the beauty of art. Learn about many of Manchester’s early citizens, including a prominent governor, a Swiss artist, Manchester’s first female black landowner, and a popular physician died of a cholera outbreak in 1849.
Please note, this tour involves walking on uneven terrain, and may not be suitable for individuals with mobility issues. The tour begins at the chapel near the Pine Street entrance.
This activity is a free, guided historic walk. Be sure to bring friends!
The tour will include time for socialization and a tabling done by AARP NH with information on brain health and AARP NH specific events and social missions. The lecture will be related to the history of Manchester NH, with a discounted ticket for those attending to explore the Millyard Museum afterwards.
