Following our trip to Eisenhüttenstadt on June 18th, the LINKE Berlin Internationals and Berlin DSA are happy to announce our second day trip. This time we’re going to Dessau, home of the Bauhaus art movement.
The cost is once more FREE! All you need is a €9 monthly train ticket.
The Bauhaus school of art was formed by Walter Gropius in 1919 with a manifesto stating that “architecture is the fine arts” and an aim of creating a “Gesamtkunstwerk” – or total work of art, in which buildings and their contents are designed as a whole entity, with no distinction between form and function.
Bauhaus was originally founded in Weimar, but forced to move to Dessau in 1926 under pressure from Weimar’s conservative régime. The Bauhaus building in Dessau was designed according to Bauhaus philosophy, with glass curtain walls which wrap around corners and provide views of the building’s interiors, and its supporting structure. In 1932, the Bauhaus building in Dessau was forced to close by the rising Nazi movement.
In our tour, we plan to visit some or all of the following buildings:
* The recently opened Bauhaus Museum, displaying the collection of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation. This collection comprises around 52,000 catalogued exhibits and is the second-largest collection worldwide on the theme of the Bauhaus.
* The Bauhaus building, designed by Walter Gropius. The building was built in 1926 and contains historic spaces that are usually closed to the public.
* The Masters’ Houses of the artists’ colony of Oskar Schlemmer, László Moholy-Nagy, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee and others.
* The Konsum Building a model flat in the Houses with Balcony Access and the SieTö I terraced house (currently only viewable from the outside).
If you want to join the trip, join us at 11am on Platform 2 of Alexanderplatz station. We will be getting the 11.08 train to Dessau.
