For this exhibition, Creative Haverhill invites you to experience a book not just as something to read, but as something to walk through.
What’s in the Closet?, written and illustrated by local artist and retired clinical social worker Catherine Mannheimer, transforms the gallery into an exploration of imagination. Rather than a traditional exhibition, this installation brings the pages of an illustrated book onto the walls, allowing visitors to step inside the story itself.
At its heart, What’s in the Closet? explores something both fascinating and frightening: the power of imagination. What might be under the bed? What could be hiding behind the closet door? Through thoughtful storytelling and expressive imagery, Mannheimer gently addresses universal fears of the unknown while encouraging young readers and adults alike to pause, breathe, and take charge of their imaginations.
A Haverhill native, Mannheimer integrates art and emotional awareness in her work, creating stories that foster resilience, reflection, and healing. This book is the second in her series of self-illustrated picture books designed as tools for therapeutic teaching.
As you move through the space, we invite you to reconnect with your own imagination, and perhaps reconsider what might be waiting behind the door.
Visitors will be encouraged to contribute to our Community Wall by sharing a drawing or reflection inspired by the exhibition. Because when we share our stories, art connects us all!
