Born in Shanghai in 1961, Ping Wang has had a remarkable artistic journey. After graduating from the Oil Painting Department of Shanghai Teachers University and exhibiting widely across China, Ping moved to New Zealand in 1993. Invited by Russell Beck, Director of the Southland Museum and Art Gallery, he began teaching and exhibiting before settling in Arrowtown, where he quickly became an integral part of the community. From his galleries in the historic Postmaster’s House and later on Adamson Drive, Ping’s diverse artworks — spanning watercolours, oils, cartoons, ceramics, and sculpture — reached collectors worldwide. He won numerous awards and contributed to Arrowtown life in many ways: teaching art, founding the Badminton Club, coaching tennis, driving the Community Coach, and even becoming a local pool champion.
Today, while he continues to teach art in China, Ping still considers New Zealand his second home. He has now generously decided that the paintings he left here will be sold, with 50% of proceeds donated to Baskets of Blessing and the Lakes District Museum.
Please join us on opening night to celebrate the work of a much-loved artist and community member.
