Opening of a BIENALSUR exhibition:Our Wandering Continents
By Marcela Cabutti (Argentina)
Thursday 30 October at 18:00
Origins Centre, Wits
Marcela Cabutti draws on research into geological and historical archives, in which maps and rocks serve as coordinates for a narrative about time and territory. The artist focuses on the work of South African and Argentine geologists who provided evidence of continental drift.
In this investigation, the artist’s gaze shifts between the geological and the poetic as she follows the traces of an ancient contact. In Our Wandering Continents the artist proposes a reappraisal of what we usually consider motionless, such as continents and tectonic plates, to restore their status as bodies in slow and constant motion, a process that transcends human perception. By preserving the memory of a past union, rocks become an archive; the map a creative fiction; and the Earth a wandering body.
Marcela Cabutti is an Argentine multimedia artist, currently artist-in-residence at Origins Centre Wits, as part of BIENALSUR 2025 (https://bienalsur.org/en/single_agenda/692). She is a contemporary sculptor whose artwork forms a dialogue with the particularities of space, reconfiguring from the direct relationship with their environment.
Curated by Clarissa Appendino (Argentina) and Tammy Hodgskiss Reynard (South Africa)
