Opening event & meet the artist: 12pm, Saturday 22 June
Exhibition dates: 22 June - 20 July, 2024
Join us for the opening of Kalawan bakmob en bafaloumob (bright barks and buffalo), a collection of distinctive new works by artist Luke Djalgarrarra. It's going to be wild!
Experimenting with metallic and fluorescent paints, Luke has developed a new way of working, hand-painting buffalo skulls, barks and carved sculptures under black light. By day the works pop off the wall, building on the strong tradition of vibrant colour works from Ngukurr Arts artists. By night and under UV light the works take a psychedelic spin into an entirely different form and personality. Old stories, new ways.
If you're in Darwin and can't make the opening, be sure to drive by the gallery at night to see his works glow and shape-shift.

These works have been created and reworked specifically for Laundry Gallery in collaboration with Ngukurr Arts and we're proud to present them at what will be Luke’s first ever solo exhibition. Our opening is part of the MAGNT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Visual Arts Weekend. Be sure to check out all the amazing openings and talks at the gallaries around town!

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Luke Djalgarrarra (b. 1986) lives with his wife Debbie and his five young children in Ngukurr community, 331 kilometres south-east of Katherine on the Roper Highway. His work depicts stories of country, animals and birds that he has seen out bush. What makes his work unique is the bright experimental colours and beautifully carved shapes. He loves using metallic paints and often leaves exposed wood on his carvings.
Luke grew up watching his father work as a sculptor and painter on Goulburn Island. He was also taught by his uncles on Elcho Island who were great carvers and painters. Luke started painting his own work when he was just 17 and more recently has been carving sculptures of birds and animals.
