Cheyne Flanagan OAM is a retired wildlife biologist who was the Clinical Director of the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital for 22 years. For the two years prior to retirement in late 2024, Cheyne was part of the team that established the Wild Koala Breeding facility and also was an advisor to KCA.
Cheyne has been passionate about all animals but especially wildlife her entire life, and was recognised for her commitment to wildlife conservation by being awarded an Order of Australia in 2023.
Another love has always been art - dabbling in various mediums such as watercolours, but over the last few years Cheyne has concentrated on working mainly using coloured pencils.
“Creating art in coloured pencils gives me the freedom to apply many layers of deep rich colour and finely observed details. As a scientist this attention to detail in ingrained into my training.
Coloured pencils allows expression of the love of all animals and particularly our wonderful native wildlife. This marvellous medium is very portable and mess free which is very useful when travelling throughout remote areas of Australia.”
Don't miss Cheyne's incredible art at the Guula Gallery, Wild Koala Breeding Visitor Centre. Exhibition on until 2 February 2026.
Some pieces and prints are available for sale.
