On Thursday, September 26, from 6 pm to 8:30 pm, the History Center will spotlight its new exhibit, The Legacy of Gold Cross Ambulance, followed by a panel discussion on the challenges confronting rural emergency medical services. Refreshments will be provided. The event kicks off with a gallery talk about the exhibit by Lara Perkins Hedegaard and Ryan Perkins, whose father, John Perkins, founded Gold Cross Ambulance in 1962 and helped professionalize ambulance service in Minnesota. The exhibit’s photos, memorabilia, and ambulance equipment, brings to life John Perkins’ vision to build an ambulance company, improve survival rates, develop the profession, and educate the public. Following the gallery talk Wayne Gannaway will convene a panel discussion with Perkins family members, paramedics, a state legislator, and policy analyst about ambulance deserts in rural Minnesota.
Panelists include: Senator Judy Seeberger (41, DFL), Co-chair of the state EMS Task Force and author of 2 bills aiming to resolve systemic challenges faced by EMS, and who is also a paramedic;Dr. Christopher Arendt, PharmD, RPh, Senior Clinical Manager of Clinical Pharmacy at Mayo Clinic and director of the Eyota Volunteer Ambulance service; Kelly Asche, Senior Researcher at the Center for Rural Policy and Development; Dave Zaiman, National EMS Museum Board of Directors; Lara Perkins Hedegaard; and Ryan Perkins, who began his paramedic career with his father, John Perkins.
